Raw material

Pellet mills are new energy equipment. The machine can produce a variety of materials into biomass pellets, which serve as biomass fuel or animal feed. Biomass fuels benefit from a wide range of raw materials, from household waste to agricultural residues. Adopting biomass equipment can turn waste into assets and promote resource recycling. Nowadays, it has become an excellent investment for many due to its low cost, high added value and policy support.

From which raw materials can we make biomass pellets?

Generally, biomass pellets can be made from 4 main types of raw materials: crop residues, forest waste, wood scrap and household waste.

Crop residues

Agriculture remains the pillar industry in many sectors. Crop residues are abundant in agricultural production, including rice husks, peanut husks, corn husks, canola straws, pineapple peels, etc. To make full use of these crop residues, we can use biomass equipment to process them into biomass pellets. or briquettes for combustion and food use.

Forestry waste

Forest has always been a source of fuel. But burning logs for heating is no longer an economical choice, the burn-off rate is too low, with too much ash and waste heat. In contrast, biomass pellets represent the trend of renewable energy and the future. They can be made from forestry waste like leaves, twigs, bark, fresh grass and turf, bamboo, alfalfa etc. Generally, they require a crushing and drying process before pelleting.

Wood processing scraps

Residual wood scraps mostly come from furniture and panel processing factories. Saw dust is the best material for making pellets. They can be put directly into pellet mills without pre-treatment. Pellets made by sawdust look bright and smooth. Sanding wood power is another frequent scrap in wood processing. Because it is very fine and light, we recommend processing it together with wood chips or sawdust. Wood chips can be classified into large and small sizes. If the diameter is less than 3mm, you can put it directly into the pellet mill. Otherwise, you have to chop it into smaller sizes for further processing. In addition, wooden offcuts are cut from the furniture. They have different shapes, so need to be crushed before pelleting.

Household waste

We generate a lot of household waste every day, such as waste paper and plastic. Some solid wastes are combustible, but hardly any of us use them for lack of special equipment. With the advancement of technology, biomass pellet mill can be combined with other equipment to process it into combustible fuel. This is an effective way to clean up not only energy resources, but also our environment.

Biomass pellet quality is influenced by raw materials

To make the best biomass pellets, you must control the quality of raw materials ahead of time. Here are some criteria for selecting materials.

Biomass peels raw materials

Size of raw material should be less than 5mm. According to the hole size of the pellet mill die, the raw material needs to be crushed into a certain size. If the raw material is large or small, the pellet mill may not work well.

The raw material has a moisture content of 12% to 18%, or the pellets are loose enough to crack easily.

A binder is not required to make Pellets. Wood shavings and sawdust contain crude fibers with a certain adhesive capacity. Only by pressing can they take shape.

You can mix different types of raw materials to make wood pellets. Mixed biomass pellets do not represent inferior quality. But if you mix straw with wood shavings, the quality of the pellets is far behind that of pure wood pellets.

Pellets made by mouldy raw materials cannot reach the standard density and heat capacity. You can add another 50% or more fresh ingredients. The quality of the pellet depends on how much fresh material you have added.

After reading the above material, you will know what raw materials a pellet mill can process. Good biomass pellets not only come from high quality raw materials, but also depend on pellet mill performance. Choosing the best pellet mill is definitely a wise investment. It can process almost any type of raw material you can imagine. Additionally, they can exploit the maximum value of your material by producing hard, smooth and shiny pellets.
